“If any more of the guild come for these books, they will also die,” Eoflixis said as she circled Jaslin.

“They don’t want books.” Jaslin tugged at the roots of her hair as she stared down at Brashon’s body. “Didn’t you hear him? They want coin. I must return to Galvenstone at once and find Cyran.”

“But we must take the thirty-seven books with us. All the passages of these treasures are stored in my mind, but the words have been removed from the treasures in my lair.”

“I told you—I cannot carry thirty-seven books. For all I care, you can fly between your tower and this one and sit on your piles of books when you slumber. Or you can remain here. I’m leaving.” She grabbed two tomes that held the most detailed accounts of what she had learned and rushed for the door, following the halls as best she could remember, heading for the one entrance high up in the tower.

When she reached an upper level, after following several staircases, more footsteps sounded in the hall ahead. She ducked into an open doorway and waited in the dark until the footsteps passed. When she turned to slip back out into the hall, the doorway had become an emerald wall.

What? Jaslin pounded on the stone, which was solid. “What happened?”

Eoflixis’s voice sounded behind her. “It’s the old magic of these towers. When you wander, the corridors alter themselves.”

Jaslin swallowed her dread as she spun about. Faint light shone somewhere in the distance. “Can you lead us out of here?”

“I thought you didn’t care if I accompanied you any longer.”

“I’m sorry I said that. I just wanted to get out of here and warn my brother.”

“No. I cannot smell much other than for the treasures, whose dusty pages still line my nostrils. That’s how scrying works. I could lead you in that direction again, but that is all.”

Fuck. Jaslin took a tentative step into almost utter darkness. Her foot settled on stone, and she took another and another, growing braver. The passageways twisted and made corners at bizarre locations, the architecture more like a natural cave rather than a manmade structure.

“Wait.” Eoflixis’s voice was hoarse.

Jaslin paused, and her mouth went dry.

“Something roves these halls. It’s not dragon but nearly as old, a spirit from the ancient world. Something akin to a wight. It melds with the shadows and cannot be seen by mortals.”

Jaslin’s heart raced. The danger the nyrens warned me about. “What do we do?”

“Walk through walls and return to the main halls if you can. And do so swiftly. I cannot protect you.”

Jaslin quickened her pace, the tomes in her arms growing heavier and heavier. She hurried through an area where the air turned cold, almost brittle, like winter at Nevergrace.

“Run!” Eoflixis flapped away, disappearing.

Jaslin dropped the tomes and bolted. The hall before her divided into two branching passageways. Without thinking, she hurtled through the one on her right, the sensation of cold slipping away and then growing thicker. This corridor divided into three more.
